Programming and actions for revitalization and renovation in Iran were officially established in 1985 in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. During the last three decades, it has been slow and sometimes faced with conflicting approaches but has had an evolutionary and growing process. With the establishment of the Urban Development and Revitalization Holding Corporation of Iran in 1997 and the formation of a policy-making institution in this field, one of the first promotion actions in this field was the Launching of the Haft Shahr magazine as the first specialized quarterly in the field of urban revitalization and renovation, which began in 2000. A review of the Haft Shahr issues from the beginning until today, shows a movement from a physical-oriented approach (with more focus on protection and restoration) towards an interdisciplinary approach (with more attention to the cultural and social fields).
In this regard and following the approach of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development for promoting the concept of gender equality in urban development policies, one issue of Haft Shahr was allocated to the subject of “Citizenship and Gender”. This special issue is published with the cooperation of the Office of Women and Family Affairs under the guidance of the scientific committee of this office and the Haft Shahr Secretariat. Undoubtedly, the breadth and depth of the topics in the discussion of citizenship and gender do not allow to address all the related aspects of this issue, but the effort has been to create a flow through the presentation of the topics and draw the attention of the audience to the shortcomings and challenges of this field. There is a need for a dialogue should be resumed in a fruitful direction. It is hoped that with the participation and consensus of academics, specialists, experts, managers, and all actors in this field, successive steps will be taken to continue this path.
